Atlantic Beach Fire Department was formed in 1957 as an all-volunteer force. Using a surplus truck and a barn as a station they provided the only fire protection for all of Bogue Banks. As towns were formed and communities established our district decreased in size, but as with all of Bogue Banks the population has increased . Today the population is approximately 2500 and seasonal population increases from 20,000 to 40,000+. They now respond from a two-story station equipped with an Engine, a 55' Quint, a 100' Ladder Truck, two ALS Ambulances, a Utility Truck, a Four wheel drive pickup, an ATV and Boat, and a Chief's vehicle. We have 14 Career personnel, approximately 25 Volunteer's and 13 Explorers. They provide Fire, ALS EMS, and Water rescue services 24 hours-a-day seven days-a-week. They also perform Fire Prevention Inspections for Commercial occupancies and offer a courtesy Fire safety walk through for the home. Fire Safety and CPR classes are offered at various times at the Fire Station.
Smoke alarms are a neccessity for all households an not to have at least one installed properly is neglecting the safety of your home. The single-station, battery-powered smoke alarm we know today became available to consumers in the 1970s, and since then, the home fire death rate has been reduced by half. NFPA estimates that 94% of U.S. homes have at least one smoke alarm today, and most states have laws requiring them in residential dwellings.
IT is Important to have working smoke alarms are essential in every household.
Homes with smoke alarms (whether or not they are operational) typically have
a death rate that is 40-50% less than the rate for homes without alarms.
Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home (including the
basement) and outside each sleeping area. If you sleep with the door closed,
NFPA recommends installing smoke alarms inside the room. In new homes, smoke
alarms are required in all sleeping rooms.
Position the smoke alarms high on ceilings or walls as smoke rises. Ceiling-mounted
alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall;
wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to 12 inches away from the ceiling.
On vaulted ceilings, be sure to mount the alarm at the highest point of the
ceiling.
Don't install smoke alarms near windows, outside doors, or ducts where drafts
might interfere with their operation.
Don't paint your smoke alarms; paint or other decorations could keep them from
working when you most need it.
Reports have emerged that in certain media demonstrations, some children did not readily awaken to the audible signal of a home smoke alarm.
